Around the World at the Charleston Museum

Family fun and excitement will be found throughout the summer at the Charleston Museum. Since its founding in 1773, The Charleston Museum has collected artifacts and specimens from far beyond the South Carolina Lowcountry. The Museum is now able to share these exotic items with young visitors in a new exhibit called “Around the World.” This exhibit is part of the rotating exhibit series in Kidstory, the Museum’s hands-on exhibit for children. “Around the World” will examine the Indian Subcontinent through August 26, and Mexico and the Caribbean from August 28-December 31. Each exhibit features toys and games from the area as well as children’s clothing. The Museum’s education department will offer special family programming in conjunction with “Around the World” throughout the summer and fall.

“Around the World” will introduce children to items that are a part of everyday life for children from other parts of the world. Children can see pieces from the Indian Subcontinent, such as a carved ebony elephant from Sri Lanka and a toy horse and rider from Pakistan. Molas from Panama, a drum from the Haitian Revolution, and a child’s costume and dolls from Mexico round out the Mexico and the Caribbean portion of the exhibit.

Kidstory is a hands-on, educational exhibit that teaches children of all ages the rich history of Charleston and South Carolina. Interactive components and wall-length murals of the Museum’s Dill Sanctuary and Heyward-Washington House, as well as other notable Charleston scenes, captivate children and promise to spark their love of history for many years to come. Admission to Kidstory is included with general Museum admission.
