• 2 tablespoons margarine
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • ½ cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated

Melt margarine in a heavy saucepan over low heat. Add flour, stirring until smooth. Cook one minute, stirring constantly. Gradually stir in milk and cook over medium heat, stirring until thick. Add salt, pepper, and cheese. Stir until cheese melts.
